ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the transformations of Chinese housing regime influence the urbanisation pattern in China. It will first discuss how housing policies determine the supply and demand of housing in urban China, and then analyse how the changes of housing provision mode have affected rural-urban migration, intercity labour mobility, the financing of urban infrastructure and general urban economic activities in China. The Chinese experience on the interaction between housing regime and urbanisation is unique, but it clearly indicates that an effective housing regime that could responsively provide adequate and affordable housing is crucial to the success of an inclusive and equitable urbanisation.
