ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to understand redevelopment as a current trend of housing provision in Indian cities with case studies from Mumbai. Based on an empirical study of several redevelopment projects, it attempts to answer first why has redevelopment assumed so much significance in the post-1990s era; second, what are the defining characteristics and implications of current trends in redevelopment in Mumbai; and third, does the current mode of redevelopment, in policy and practice, help solve some of the housing shortages in the city? The three phases of housing redevelopment in Mumbai are discussed, followed by a critical review of different typologies of redevelopment.
