ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to study vast narratives (Harrigan and WardripFruin) according to the theoretical paradigm named narrative ecosystems. It focuses on the study of the morphology of the TV serial narrative format, discussing the selection and evolution patterns that affect their characters and that lead to the development of different narrative formats. The chapter addresses the issue of narrative ecosystems and the need for a dynamic model of analysis able to take into account the complex mode of operation of production. It concentrates on a small portion of the research, using the narrative ecosystem paradigm as an approximation. The chapter also focuses on the study of the morphology of the TV serial narrative formats, as originated by the selection patterns borrowed from the biological ecosystems. It applies selection and evolution to TV series in analogy with ecosystems, but both concepts will be used as approximations, since there are evident differences between the two systems.
