ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the three major Spanish-language newspapers in the US–El Diario, La Opinion, and El Nuevo Herald to study to what extent and how they represent Hispanic cultural identity. The Hispanic press in the US is in general pan-Hispanic when it deals with Hispanic topics within the US and nation-specific when it refers to the Hispanic population outside the US. This press is also pan-Hispanic because it uses a neutral Spanish language. Immigration is always a relevant topic in the Spanish-language press, because the media serve those who are themselves or have relatives and friends who are immigrants. The Hispanic press is specifically so, not just because it is written in Spanish, because it focuses on Hispanic issues and approaches the news from a Hispanic perspective. The Hispanic press shows respect for the other communities in the US and there is total absence of criticism toward others for religious, ethnic, or cultural reasons.
