ABSTRACT

Newman's whole life history shows his total devotion to faith and to truth. The structure of the Apologia reveals the changing status of Newman's mind as he progressed towards the Roman Catholic Church. In 1843, Newman made a formal retraction of the hard things he had said against the Catholic Church. He continues to distinguish between explicit and implicit reasoning called formal and informal inference. Newman concluded A Grammar of Assent by applying his principles, and giving his outline of the evidences for Natural and Revealed Religion. Newman had supreme trust in the power of truth, yet his defense was humble, and did not give in to intellectualism at the expense of mystery. His entire life was a sacrifice for the truth. In all respects, Newman was the champion of Truth.
