ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 introduces the concept of the influence of structural geology on slope stability, shows the cost to society of slope instability and provides definitions of landslide terms and dimensions. Also introduced are methods of slope stability analysis – limit equilibrium, probabilistic (Monte Carlo analysis) and load and resistance factor design. Risk management is discussed in terms of slope hazards and consequence of failure.
