ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses the stability of wedge-shaped blocks of rock where two discontinuities intersect behind the face such that the line of intersection between the two planes is oriented to dip out of the face. The stability of these wedges is analysed using limit equilibrium methods (LEA) where the ratio of the resisting forces, defined by the cohesion and friction angle of the sliding surfaces, to the driving forces is the factor of safety (FS); this method of analysis is detailed in Appendix III. A series of design charts is included to determine the factor of safety of wedges for friction only (zero cohesion), dry slopes. Example problems are included.
