ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that ship side is simplified as two different models: unstiffened plate and stiffened plate. Stiffened plate and stiffened plate under the impact of two kinds of indenters show a close performance on energy absorption, which suggests that stiffener makes small effect on the energy absorption of plate. The chapter examines structural response and energy absorption of the two simplified models under the impact of indenters with wedge shape and sphere shape, by numerical and experimental methods. Considering the complexity of the collision problem, two aspects are selected to the simplify ship collision problem: geometric model and physical assumption. Ship side is frequently subjected to collision, which is a dangerous condition during the ship operation. Based on a simplified ship-structure collision model, L. Zhu & D. Faulkner carried out small scaled ship impact experiments, from which some dynamic response data were obtained.
