ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the parallel side-by-side collision, which is prone to take place when replenishment or aid between two ships is carrying out. Ship collision is a complicated fluid-structure coupling response process. The chapter considers the parallel side-by-side ship collision problem, the use of the empirical formula leads to significant differences with that of fluid-structure coupling method. It examines the influence of fluid damping is larger and cannot be neglected in the parallel side-by-side ship collision, so a simplified model is proposed to calculate the added mass of ships in the parallel side-by-side ship collision process. A simplified model based on the added mass and the fluid damping force is proposed to replace the fluid-structure coupling model in the simulation of the parallel side-by-side collision. There are two simulation methods studying the hydrodynamic effects in ship collision that is the fluid-structure coupling model and the added mass model.
