ABSTRACT

The relatively short text Gör ditt val, issued in 2003 by a relatively small publisher, is one in a string of publications on Kierkegaard that Edward Ted Harris has produced in the years since completing his dissertation on Kierkegaard in 1984. The general aim Harris sets out for his book is to formulate a response to what he understands to be the long-looming crisis of existence that has overtaken modern Western culture. In order to set up Kierkegaard's view in response to the spiritual sickness of the West, Harris spends the greater part of his first two chapters sketching an elaborate philosophical story of the decline of Western culture. At times in his argument, Harris moves far too quickly, and it often feels as if his analysis goes a mile wide, but only an inch deep. It can be noted that Harris' book has some specific strengths, but that it also suffers from some serious shortcomings.
