ABSTRACT

The addition of an adhesive to impregnate the weak canvas of a painting with the aim of strengthening the support is a treatment that was done in the past, before lining became almost a routine treatment towards the end of the 19th C. With the new minimalist trend embraced in the 21st C, lining started to be seen as a very invasive treatment. This is why, in the frame of the Nanorestart project, new consolidation products based on nanotechnologies are being studied as possible alternatives to lining. A survey was carried out to know what are the current practices and views of conservators regarding canvas consolidation. The results of the survey, together with knowledge gathered from the literature, were used to establish the requirements these new products must meet.
