ABSTRACT

A newly trained general practitioner (GP) often feels faced with just three career options: a salaried post, a partnership or a period of doing locums. GPs are in demand in all manner of environments because of the flexibility of their capabilities. This chapter explores some of these different environments, the rewards of working within them and how doctors can find work in these fields. General practice in the United Kingdom has long been run on the partnership model, and this continues to be the predominant model for National Health Service (NHS) general practice. Rural GPs have the opportunity to shape their roles according to the physical and clinical environment in which they operate. Medical care in community hospitals is normally led by GPs. GPs are the backbone of the Defence Medical Services which provide health care for the military, and unlike military secondary care consultants who are usually embedded within NHS hospitals, military GPs operate entirely within the military system.
