ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the need to understand events within the cultural and historical contexts in which they are shaped and come into being. The events are embodiments of different cultures and different values of production and consumption. Power permeates all the debates going on behind the scenes – power can even make some alternatives appear to be the only ones whereas others become unthinkable. Critical readings are the way forward to ground understanding of values and meaning in communities. The concepts are valuable in their own right but have more meaning when applied in cultural contexts. A critical view of events will mean exploring the discourses that shape them. These critical skills are very important, as authors have demonstrated here.
