ABSTRACT
In her first remarks as president-elect of the Republic of China (ROC or Taiwan), Tsai Ing-wen said: “Our democratic system, national identity and international space must be respected” clearly reflecting that the issue of international space will continue to be a major component of the new administration’s foreign policy. Her pledge was further reiterated in her inauguration address on May 20, 2016: “We will bring Taiwan closer to the world, and the world closer to Taiwan.” This chapter critically examines the new directions of Taiwan’s foreign policy under the Tsai government by looking at the main factors shaping the evolving formulation of Taiwan’s policy towards international space.
