ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that children's indoor environments must be included, in order to give a picture of the total environment for children today. The investigation concentrated on the indoor environment, but some notes were also recorded on outdoor play. These notes and a survey of the neighbourhoods give the same picture of passive play patterns and unstimulating environment that so-many earlier studies of outdoor play have presented. The children in multi-storey housing, however, played moving games more indoors and the children in small houses played them more outdoors. The explanation of the differences between children living in different housing types must be twofold: more space invites more varied and creative play, but parental attitudes are equally important in deciding the suitable form and extent of play. The children in the investigation had been occupied mainly with quiet and passive activities.
