ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the child's image of his/her street which attempted to identify some significant design aspects of the relations between children and their immediate surroundings, in particular the street on which they live. The urban street is rapidly becoming a dull, sterile and sometimes even hostile environment. Contrary to current design approaches and the layout of many residential areas today which tend to separate children's activities into mono-functional buildings, it is important to integrate the children in the spectrum of the daily street activities. The integration of children's activities with the general street activities calls for special attention to the subject of vehicular traffic. One way is entirely to exclude the vehicular traffic from the designated area for the children's activities. Designing streets with consideration of their image ought to lead to the creation of more suitable urban environments for children by turning large parts of the urban environment into places for play and enjoyment.
