ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on all possible strategies for using exopolysaccharides to treat cancer. Deaths due to cancer are listed here in decreasing order of frequency: cancer of the lung (1.69 million deaths), liver (788,000 deaths), colorectal (774,000 deaths), stomach (754,000 deaths), and breast (571,000 deaths). Among men, lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancer are the most common, while in women, breast, colorectal, lung, cervical, and stomach cancer are the most common. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and around the world. Almost as many Americans die from lung cancer every year than of prostate, breast, and colon cancer combined. Bone cancer is the growth of malignant or benign tumor(s) in the cells of bones. Skin cancer is the malignancy of melanocytes or cells in the epidermal layer of the skin. Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells that originate in bone marrow.
