ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how Greenland’s ice sheet was an essential, if at times recalcitrant, accomplice to US and Danish Cold War geopolitical practices. Challenging and undermining the materials, sites and modalities actors such as the US military brought to bear on it. The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) continues to map and evaluate the outer continental shelves off Greenland, stretching towards the North Pole. Our material and volumetric accounting of Greenland show how we might approach a more critical form of Arctic geopolitics, emphasising how the landscapes and seascapes are not simply passive volumes awaiting human action.
