ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help mentor support a beginning physical education teacher to teach and evaluate the success of the lessons they have planned to promote pupil learning and development. It looks at important teacher personal characteristics, which assist a beginning teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment that enables all pupils to achieve their potential. The chapter looks at a range of basic teaching skills, including self-presentation, organisation and safety, movement and positioning, use of voice and instructions, use of praise and use of demonstration, which mentor need to support a beginning teacher to develop. It focuses on enabling mentor to support a beginning teacher to develop teaching approaches further once they have mastered the basics. The chapter discusses the important role that differentiation, teaching strategies and assessment for learning play in supporting pupil learning, and how mentor might support a beginning teacher's practice in these areas.
