ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the work of George Cadbury and discusses his legacy in modern business and social policy. He was a Quaker and his religious beliefs heavily influenced his vision for workers welfare, both physical and spiritual. George Cadbury and his brother Richard pursued social welfare strategies and were well-known philanthropists. In addition to employee accommodation, they built a hospital, a convalescent home for children, and provided education for workers. Organisations committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have competitive advantages such as improved employee motivation and productivity, in addition to lower labour costs, improved health and safety, and lower premium rates from insurers and lenders. Cadbury valued education and supported programmes for the workforce and also the local community. He was instrumental in the development of Adult Schools and also showed his commitment by personally teaching in them. The children that the Cadburys employed were expected to finish work an hour early twice per week to attend evening classes.
