ABSTRACT

The contribution is focused on the inquiry into the potentials for sustainable development in region of Upper Gemer, which in the past was a mining centre of the wider region. Based on a survey of real geographical, social a demographic background features of the territory, it is tourism that appears to be the determining factor for sustainable development. The resulting proposal to the solution aiming at sustainable development in the selected area by way of systematic and long-term management of tourism while making use of the tools defined by the legislative framework of the Law on support of tourism at all levels of public administration, not omit the private sector. The final discussion is focused on comparing and identifying the importance of current weight of tourism among the rest of the existing branches of national economy as regards the area of our concern in the context of sustainable regional development.
