ABSTRACT

The question raised by Leonardo J. Waisman concerns the famous successes of European Jesuit missions in teaching music to the natives of the Paraguay province. Through close reading of Jesuit sources, Waisman interprets the special circumstances of these encounters, offering an explanation from its native side, and traces further uses of the music through generations of Indians.
