ABSTRACT

Throughout the years during which the School of Community Studies developed, the Director of the School, Brian J. Ashley, has retained his interest in the International Playgrounds Association. Part of that interest was expressed in the initial planning of the courses when Play Leadership training was included in the training programme. The two sub-sections of this programme could be seen as, first, the indirect involvement of adults through the types of provision for play, and, second, the intervention of adults in play through such functions as leadership in adventure playgrounds, hospital groups, special needs groups, and so on. The courses which were designed in this way were of interest to people and were meeting the needs of people engaged in a voluntary commitment to a community-based group, and also to professional workers for whom knowledge of play might not have been a course component in their previous professional training.
