ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Agile approaches and the way in which they are shown in everyday work and organizational culture. The data are based on a case study carried out in Finland, and the case company is a media group engaged in the publication of newspapers. The case company has created digital services for over 20 years, and, therefore, digitalization in itself is nothing new for them. The challenge is how to balance between the print edition and digital businesses, as print still covers the majority of total sales income. Investing in digital services means bringing new kind of competences into the company. This means also new ways of working—including Agile project management practices. The case company employs 2,000 people, but there is only one team that uses Agile practices. Why did they started using them? Do they see the method increasing the value of their work? How are the practices radiating to the other parts of the organization? What does the management board think of this phenomenon? The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how Agile ways of working can create more value in a digital environment.
