ABSTRACT

This research is motivated by results of theoretical studies, government policies and empirical facts about the importance of improving student’s career competence at early ages. The purpose of this research was to get the student’s career competence profile of public elementary school students in Jakarta, Indonesia. The study used a survey method. The research sample was 603 grade IV students, 30 headmasters, and 30 teachers of public elementary schools in Jakarta in the academic year of 2016/2017. The research sample was gained by using a multistage cluster random sampling technique. The data collection employed Need Assessment Inventory and Career Competence Scale for elementary school students. Data was analyzed by using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Operational data analysis was performed by using software IBM SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. The results show that first, headmasters and teachers judge that all of the student’s career competence profile is important. Another important thing is master the skills to investigate the world of work, master working strategy, understand the relationship between personal qualities, education and training. Second, the student’s career competence profile shows that the condition of the fourth grade students in Jakarta has not reached an optimal level of career competency.
