ABSTRACT

The aims of this study were to identify the factors that caused the length of the completion time of the studies of the graduate students at Bogor Agricultural University, and to formulate an adaptive managerial implication. Factors that may have influenced the study period of graduate students were examined and classified through the CART (Classification and Regression Trees) method, using the data of students who graduated between 2003–2013, consisting of 5,224 master’s and 1,786 doctoral programs. A descriptive analysis method was also used to analyze the academic data related to the stage of study completion. Factors that affected the doctoral program were the faculty, age and master’s GPA (Grade Point Average), while factors affecting the master’s program were bachelor’s GPA, faculty, profession, and the linearity of previous education. In-depth interviews also showed that student motivation was crucial to the completion time of their studies. In term of the management side, strengthening the administrative system so that it can support the study process of the students, starting from the registering process until graduation time, is essential. Therefore, the proposed managerial implications are the improvement of the admission system, improvement of the evaluation of the students’ study progress, and optimization of the academic rules implementation.
