ABSTRACT

Based on the two-dimensional horizontal tunnel model and the new air supply terminal model, the influence of different air jet velocities from the terminal on the fire smoke gas distribution and safety zone was investigated. The results showed that, in the area right ahead of the terminal, the gas distribution can be characterized by three regions including the entrainment region, flushing region and eddy region at different air jet velocities. The gas concentrations in the flushing region and eddy region were lower than 10 ppm. The area of the eddy region with low gas concentration increased linearly as the air jet velocity increased. When the air jet velocity was 50 m/s, the average velocity of the airflow in the safety zone was lower than 2 m/s and the safety zone, especially the eddy region, was much more suitable for rescuing mine workers.
