ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the use of documentary film in the famous ecofeminist anti-dam movement popularly known as the Narmada BachaoAndolan. The two most well-known people associated with the movement are women: founder MedhaPatkarand novelist Arundhati Roy. Complex theoretical issues arise when postcolonial ecofeminists use media to engage in globalization from below. The documentary by Aradhana Seth, Dam/Age (2003), demonstrates the complicity of the movement with global media in terms of a telegenics of celebrity personality cult. The role of documentary is changing as it is used increasingly as a tool of investigative journalism and global media campaigns.
