ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), which is currently recognised as an autonomous region under the Iraqi constitution. It examines the characteristics of the current healthcare system, such as the existence of dual healthcare practices, healthcare financing, and the role of policy makers under clinical governance. The chapter critically analyses future strategies of patient safety, including the recommendations to implement an Incident Reporting System, the use of Health Information Systems to measure and improve patient safety, and the provision of education and training to improve healthcare performance. Clinical governance is a system through which health governors and clinical leaders are responsible for continuously improving health services and maintaining the quality of care. The chapter also considers future patient safety strategies for KRI including the implementation of an Incident Reporting System. Additionally, the introduction of 'a culture of data for action' through the Health Information System was regarded as the second future strategy of patient safety.
