ABSTRACT

This base of this chapter’s argument sits at the material base of all sport: the material production of the equipment needed to play sport. However, the production of those commodities requires the exploitation of child labour. To address this inequity, this chapter examines the core element of the justification of sport: universal good for humanity. In doing so it takes into consideration the current political economic structures of sport, what I term New Economic Order sport, and a specific version of humanity that purports to encompass all human beings while relying on the ruthless exploitation of terms of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Thus, this chapter argues that the core justification for ‘global sport’ requires rethinking the ways in which contemporary sport is organised and is in need of significant transformation.
