ABSTRACT

This chapter examines trends in sports participation, organisation and policy in Greenland, highlighting common themes and outcomes. The survey on sports participation in Greenland was carried out in the spring of 2015 by the Danish Institute for Sports Studies, commissioned by the Sports Confederation of Greenland. Sports participation in Greenland reflects the geography, both physical and social, of the country. The chapter examines active adults' use of different settings and venues for sport/exercise in Greenland. Active adults appear most likely to organise their sport/exercise themselves. Accessibility to venues varies substantially across the country, particularly between the cities and settlements, with the latter often tending to offer only a small community house and perhaps a gravel-covered football pitch for sporting activities besides, of course, the vast opportunities of the surrounding landscape. 'Nature' is by far the most popular venue for sport or exercise participation among active adults in Greenland.
