ABSTRACT

The older adult population is the fastest growing segment of North American society. It is estimated that by the year 2035, 20 percent (70 million) of the population of the United States will be 65 and older, a significant increase from 1900 when older adults made up 4 percent of the population (www.census.gov). Studies indicate that only one-quarter of older Americans exercise regularly. The physical and psychological benefits of exercise have been well established for any age group (Katz, 2000; Tulle, 2008). Exercise bolsters self-esteem, increases life satisfaction, and improves overall feelings of well-being. This chapter addresses the importance of community resources as a means of promoting social and physical integration in later life.
