ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the health benefits of physical exercise as a promoter of physical and mental health for healthy aging. It describes some experiences that Cuban practitioners have gained in caring for elderly people by encouraging them to get involved in physical activities, especially by joining the so-called Círculos de abuelos (Grandparents Clubs). These experiences contribute to the individuals’ subjective well-being and encourage them to stay engaged in physical activities. Also, this chapter stresses the Cuban government’s concern for ensuring a good quality of life and psychological well-being during the aging process in general, and specifically for former athletes who have gone into retirement.
