ABSTRACT

This chapter presents recommendations as to ways the US government can respond to the challenges, preferably mitigating further social disruption. Moreover, we have affirmed that ecological changes associated with water scarcity and increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events pose significant threats to US security interests. The United States should focus development assistance on building inclusive water governance mechanisms as a means of correcting distributional inequalities, building climate resilience and strengthening the rule of law. Make water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), a secure food supply and disaster risk reduction possible through sustainable, climate-resilient water management at the river basin level. To ensure delivery on its WASH and global food and water security objectives, the US government should increase its focus on promoting long-term water management within partner countries from which focused project assistance for access and sanitation can be secured.
