ABSTRACT

The McClintock Collective is a network of science teachers based in Victoria, actively involved in promoting science education that is relevant to and inclusive of girls and women. The original focus and a powerful driving force for the Collective has been the development of gender-inclusive classroom strategies and resource materials. In 1988 the Collective established regional 'sub-branches'. Several country groups wanting to set up their own girls and maths and science support networks sprang up, and the Collective assisted them in a variety of ways. The Collective has worked extensively on the professional development of teachers. Although many educationalists and economists in Victoria acknowledge the need for increased participation of girls in science and technology, awareness-raising activities with girls, parents and teachers are still needed to convince the broader population of the issue of social justice. Important among the reasons are issues to do with social justice, with gender and with science itself.
