ABSTRACT

In the present chapter, efforts have been made to highlight an alternative route of preparing functionally graded materials through fused deposition modelling, a widely known additive manufacturing technology and investment casting. Various advancements have been documented on the duo of fused deposition modelling and investment casting, but very little has developed the functionally graded material. Recently, a group of researchers have highlighted a novel route for the development of functionally graded material (with soft core and hard outer surface). This chapter is going to take their work one step ahead through developing mathematical models, by using Buckingham’s π-theorem, in order to predict the quality characteristics of the developed materials (that includes surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, hardness and wear). This chapter is designed first to demonstrate the step-by-step procedure followed for the development of functionally graded material and thereafter mathematical models for output responses. The numerical and theoretical problems are given at the end of the chapter for the better understanding in field applications.
