ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with how observers can make use of object recognition processes to find a target object or objects in a visual search task. It discusses five problems. The first one is how rapidly can people search through objects? Second one is how can people search through objects so rapidly? Third one is Even at that speed, how can people find anything in a real scene given how many objects might be in that scene? Fourth one is what happens if people are looking for more than one type of target at one time? Fifth one is where in the mind might that yellow Volkswagen detector resides? A leading proposal is that the search template resides in Working Memory. More generally, the search template must be more like the grandmother or yellow Volkswagen detector.
