ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ideological horizon that shaped Nikolai Roerich's worldview, a view that he more or less remained committed to all his life. The ideological horizon of Roerich included the myriad tendencies of the Silver Age and the ideology of Eurasianism. The Silver Age and the philosophy of Eurasianism were inextricably woven into Nikolai Roerich's own vision. Nikolai and Helena Roerich's spiritual quests, their belief in Agni Yoga and the lure of Buddhism brought them to India. From India they undertook arduous expeditions into the heart of Asia. These expeditions into Eurasia from India were very important from the point of view of anthropology, folklore, ethnography, archaeology and art. The Roerich Pact, prepared in collaboration with George Callaver, was signed on 15 April 1935 by the United States and twenty Latin American countries. Roerich moves beyond synthesis and syncretism in his paintings on women figures into the realm of the hybrid.
