ABSTRACT

All meditation approaches teach people in one way or another to be in the present moment, the Now. In Mindfulness meditation this is defined as being non-judgementally aware of how their experience arises and changes from moment to moment. For this people need to be rooted in the present moment and not get carried away with the constant flow and flux of mental, emotional and environmental events. This chapter introduces people to being in the Now by using their experience. It uses a self-observation format which is commonly used in Cognitive Therapy and discusses a brief letting-go meditation. When conducting a group, it is important for the group leader to ‘hold the group’ so that group participants feel safe and contained. Coming here is a shorter version of the previous exercise which will generate similar and usually very deep material without using the self-observation sheets.
