ABSTRACT

Even at first sight meditation presents people with a paradox. There is an inner world to explore in all of them and right in the centre of their inner world there is their centre – a place of peace and calm. But in order to get to this place people need to go on a journey. This is the journey of meditation. It is about withdrawing their energy from the busyness of the outer world, where it usually is active, to use that same energy for inner exploration and discovery. This chapter focuses on an exercise to introduce people to the meditation posture of sitting ‘like a mountain’. If they do this exercise in a group, they can discuss what it felt like without judging any of the different experiences that people may have had. They need to find a comfortable place to sit on a straight-back chair or cross-legged on the floor.
