ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the readers with numerous strategies to integrate context into their work, particularly as they consume, produce, and interpret data for various constituencies. More higher education administrators outside of the Institutional Research Office are utilizing data to make important strategic decisions. It provides several definitions of context, multiple context scenarios, and issues about learning and working within an environment. The chapter provides the reflections and suggestions to practitioners about the sometimes nebulous concept of context. Context also includes requirements of accreditation organizations as well as anything else within the environment historically, presently, or that is anticipated which could influence outcomes. When context is not fully connected to the data being used to develop a strategy or vision, the information can become impractical. Communication throughout the entire process is critical, and the background cover sheet is one tool to provide a sound introduction to the data or report.
