ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors consider the elementary school environment and how they as educators can ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students, and all students, experience these initial formative years as positive and affirming. They discuss school culture and specific strategies that support classroom diversity in all its forms but particularly in terms of gender diversity. The authors argue the significance of Title IX in offering guidance as they attempt to respond to, and understand, the increasing gender complexity of the their transgender and gender-expansive students. They consider their obligations under state and federal education codes, laws, and proven best practices. The authors explore the role and significance of gender identity and expression within the traditional elementary school environment. They also discuss the different aspects and experiences of gender and how the functioned historically within the US system of public education.
