ABSTRACT

Andreas Deja is undoubtedly one of the best character animators in the field of traditional 2D animation, the hand-drawn animation. Andreas became known for the outstanding animation of original characters during his many years at Walt Disney Feature Animation (since 1980). These include memorable characters such as the "villains" Gaston, Jafar and Scar from "Beauty and the Beast" (1991), "Aladdin" (1992) and "The Lion King" (1994), as well as the little girl Lilo from "Lilo & Stitch" (2002). At Disney, it had been the rule for decades that the animator was not only responsible for the character's behavior and development, but also for the design. However, when he started working on a film such as "Aladdin" or "The Lion King", there were already storyboards that he could look at, but the characters were not yet visually specified. Graphically speaking, they were mostly roughs and lacked refinement.
