ABSTRACT

The contemporary profile of sexuality education is a complex one with a comprehensive view of human sexuality in contrast to the narrow scope and limited content of previous years. These changes did not occur in isolation but rather in response to a changing American society. The influence of two world wars, the work of sex researchers such as Alfred Kinsey, William Masters and Virginia Johnson, and Shere Hite, changes in marriage and family living, and the explosion of the communications industry and the mass media have all been influential in the development of modern sexuality education theory and practice. Moreover, the trend is in the direction of more and better sexuality education programs for persons of all ages. Today there are more quality sexuality education programs than ever before, paving the way for the important work that still remains to be done.
