ABSTRACT

Independent schools are an exciting and ideal medium for the development of superior quality sexuality education programs. Structurally, independent schools afford many exciting possibilities as well. First, they most often incorporate some combination of pre-kindergarten, lower, middle, and upper-level students. With a generally willing, if hesitant, staff and an unusually conducive environment, program implementation is primarily a straightforward matter of matching needs with available resources. As developmental needs become clearer, as confidence grows, as priorities, resources, and schedules shift, as other school divisions take on more or less responsibility, as community issues or controversies surface, as experience and errors teach, programs are shaped and reshaped. A sensible timetable is central to the successful implementation of a sexuality education program. As independent schools are encouraged and helped to respond more fully to the challenge, they will benefit not only their own students but the broader cause of sexuality education as well.
