ABSTRACT

Since the mid-1970s, the increasing acceptance of the importance of school-based family life education programs has proceeded hand in hand with the growing recognition of the need for comprehensive training to prepare teachers for the role of family life educator. This role requires the teacher to meet student learning needs in the controversial, value-laden, difficult-to-discuss, and constantly expanding field of human sexuality. Competent family life educators are expected to be knowledgeable about the physical, psychological, social, and moral dimensions of human sexuality and to possess positive attitudes that promote the goals of family life education. Family life education training should increase teachers' skill in leading classroom discussions about human sexuality. From the educator's perspective, perhaps the most important objective of training is to enhance teachers' ability to use effective teaching approaches and methods. This can be accomplished by discussing criteria for selecting learning activities, by demonstrating the variety of teaching techniques commonly used in family life education classes.
