ABSTRACT

Over a two year period the "Straight Talk" program was developed at Planned Parenthood of Oklahoma City. Some key ingredients that help to make programs like "Straight Talk" effective for families are the following: the goals are positive; the family systems concept is key; there is ample communication practice time; activities bring unconscious beliefs into awareness; and the format allows flexibility. The programs where the goals are problem oriented focus on what is wrong about sexuality. By spending time understanding appropriate sexual behavior, participants also learn about inappropriate sexual behavior. Modified sexual learning histories facilitate awareness and stimulate discussion. With new awareness, some of the outdated, erroneous, and irresponsible beliefs may be replaced with new, accurate, and healthier ones. Quality sexuality education programs for families will make America a more sexually responsible society. The ideas presented in this article will help make a program effective, even though there are many other considerations, variations and possibilities.
