ABSTRACT

Regulatory interventions geared towards access to efficient technology, communication of appropriate market signals, and provision of infrastructure conducive to sustainable choices are critical for promoting sustainable lifestyles. Energy efficiency labels and standards – covering electrical appliances, vehicles, and buildings – provide the UAE government a tool to drive producers and consumers alike towards energy efficiency. There is scope for more such programmes even while local capacities need to be built for effective implementation and market surveillance. This chapter delves into the role of efficiency labels and standards, and what governments can do to maximise their benefits. It also suggests that a multi-stakeholder collaborative process needs to be instituted for the design and implementation of such programmes.
