ABSTRACT

In the coming decades, Morocco will face a demographic metamorphosis due to the ageing population process which will be accompanied by a shrinkage of family size. Yet families are strongly called on to support elderly people, notably due to social protection gaps and disparities. This chapter examines how family solidarities are organized, their difficulties and their limits. This analysis contributes to highlight that family solidarities mobilized to meet the needs of older relatives won’t be able to adequately respond to the issues generated by imminent rapid ageing unless they are given more support from appropriate public policies.
