ABSTRACT

Italy is part of the Mediterranean Model of Welfare as defined by Ferrera in 1996. Over the past three decades, this model has been challenged as a consequence of demographic, social and economic changes. The aim of this chapter is to understand how and whether social policies have taken into account the evolution of men and women’s roles in society in both the private and the public spheres and whether intergenerational redistribution has evolved in a more egalitarian way compared to the past. To answer our research question, we scrutinize the evolution of Italian social policies over time, gender and generations.
